FireSafe Kids

The Fire Safe Kids education program, aimed at primary school children in Victoria has been modernised and will be launched in January 2011.

The Fire Safe Kids program, developed after extensive engagement with presenters, teachers, parents and kids across the state is based on the original core CFA primary school program called Brigades in Schools and was reviewed in 2008.As well as a working party, the process also widely involved Victorian principals, teachers and parents in reviewing and redeveloping the materials to ensure they stay relevant.

The lesson plans have been updated to be easily incorporated into the school curriculum, in accordance with the Victorian Essential Learning Standards. An e-Learning element has also been introduced to the program, where students learn about fire hazards and residential fire safety through a fun online computer game.

CFA Community Development Coordinator Dawn Hartog says: “This is a great program because not only do the kids love it – they get a real life firefighter in their classroom – it also gives our over-worked teachers a short break to sit back and take in some fire safety as well!”
